My 2c. I usually have a mains relay that is tied to EMC2 e-stop button.
My .hal file has this:

So parport pin 4 goes to an SSR (solid state relay) plus
relay(contactor) that controls the mains power to everything except the
PC. The charge pump line is commented out until I get it working.
