I've been asking similar questions about how to control motion with
other means beside G code and one solution track I am currently pursuing
is using a Python program to
interface to Hal. Hal (in the simplest terms) is the program interface
to the motion and I/O back end of EMC2. Hal itself has some logic
capabilities itself but nothing as extensive as what Python can do.

How does a differentially steered robot work? Is that some type of
harmonic drive?
