Dumb me, how can you set up the network address, etc. on a live CD install.
But, you should still be able to rig a null modem cable and get in via the
serial port.

I thought the stock Ubuntu was an 8.04 and did work, it was only the EMC 
version
of 8.04 that did not work.

When the system is booted up, and you log in via serial port, you can 
read the
boot-time messages in /var/log, such files as "messages", "syslog", "dmesg"
and so on.  "Xorg.0.log" is also in that directory.

I know of no way to make the boot messages get copied to the serial port
live while it is booting.  That doesn't mean it isn't possible, though.
