Chris,

I had a similar problem which I traced to interference from 
the spindle motor - this was in spite of having suppressor 
caps on the motor, proper grounding and ferrite rings around 
both the spindle and Z-axis motor wires. I had to change the 
spindle motor type before the problem would go away...
