Sadly, the simple table-reading code in initool.cc on that branch doesn't immediately look like it would handle the table format shown at http://git.linuxcnc.org/gitweb?p=emc2.git;a=blob;f=configs/sim/sim.tbl;hb=tlo_all_axes In any event, a quick "git log -C --stat" does not show any work done on initool.cc. A look at the random_toolchange and w_tool_length branches found them similar in both regards. So I'm no closer to Finding Michael G's branch in the repository. (In the upthread "tool table" context.) Since my interest was only to understand the parsing method used, I'll perhaps have a look once there's news that it's on the trunk.
