I've got a couple books on fractals, and they have some sort of coding 
scheme
that much make sense to methematicians, but I have a heck of a time
converting that into computer code.  There are thousands of space-filling
curves known.  Then, there are the "gaskets".  These are not curves, but
patterns of cells that are 1 or 0.  Each iteration goes to a smaller 
cell size.
And there are others, too.  I might have to get into a bit more of this, if
I can find time.
