I recall a suggestion of using a Hilbert curve as the raster on a
scanning electron microscope, as it would give equal contrast in both
directions. (this was back before image storage was usual).
I suspect it might also be usable for probing, but I am not sure that
it has any advantages over a simple raster of the same resolution.
