Gentlemen,
I have talked to a few software companies about porting their product to
Linux. Their answer is they do not wish to open their proprietary code to
the public. When is it explained that they can port it to Linux without
publishing it they say they don't trust the situation will remain the same.
Someday a court will decide if any of their code has been ported to Linux
then they will have to release all of it.
All the laws (made by man) are subject to change at man's whim. There is
nothing to stop a future law making entity from proclaiming all software
public domain. I think that is just as likely to happen as all Linux ported
code decreed open.
As for all the proprietary code - the open community is rapidly
developing replacements. There is not much open software cannot do.
There are a number of companies charging for support on open software
products. I am sure they charge for supporting features they did not
develop.
I am just happy EMC2 is open and supported. VERY HAPPY
thanks
Stuart
