Agreed, perhaps as a non-modal progress bar? That way, it would not interfere with the interactivity (eg zooming/ panning/rotating the view) and could display an estimated remaining time before the job is started... I think Mach has an elapsed time and estimated time remaining (based on videos that I have seen of it running on Youtube). Which is where I got the idea from - that and running an operation, I thought more than once: "I wonder how much more time it will be"...
