Hi All:
So I'm starting to attack the second order issues with my Bridgeport Series
I CNC I just ported to EMC2. The first issue I never really address fully is my
machines interrupt latency. The latency meter says my IBM ThinkCenter has
500,000 ns of latency. Yes, that's right, it says it's that bad. But that said,
I have yet to see a motion hickup of any kind even moving at 30 inches a min.
If I run the test on a laptop without a parallel port I get typical latencies
of only 7000 ns.
So the question is this, do the ThinkCenters have a bad rep? Is this a known
machine to avoid? But since I'm not seeing any jerks in the motion of my
machine is this really an issue? I'll likely keep most of my motion at less
than 3 in/min during machining anyway. However the EMC docs say a machine with
greater than 100,000 ns latency should be avoided at all costs.
I also turned off the integrated video and ran off of a PCI video card. Same
numbers, in fact they came up faster than normal. So any ideas or experience
out there than can help? From my pea brained observations, I'm not seeing any
ill effect. Yet by my understand of the system, I should be having all kinds of
motion control issues. Does anyone know of false results with the latency meter?
Andrew
