Gentle persons: I burned a LiveCD from the .iso file I downloaded last night. It boots up fine on my Intel D945GCLF2 motherboard (2GB RAM, onboard graphics, hyperthreading technology disabled). Latency test results ran in the high teens (ca. 18000ns) until I turned off screensaver activation on idle, which shaved off about 7000-8000ns.
Thinking like a newbie, I started EMC2 and tried out the different sim configurations offered in the EMC2 Configuration Selector. Oops, the very first one---axis--- fails in the following way: a. When I initialize and start the machine, I get a popup warning window with "Program Exceeds Limits" in the titlebar and the message "Program exceeds machine maximum on axis Z". b. If I override the warning and continue anyway, I get a different popup stop window with the message "Linear movement on line 20 would exceed joint 2's positive limit / Position relative actual". To the extent that I understand them, the other sim configurations work. In particular, axis_9axis works just the way I had expected axis to work?!? Again thinking like a newbie, I looked carefully at the EMC2 Configuration Selector and noticed that two of the choices in the left-hand pane, namely random_tc and touchy, aren't described in the right-hand pane, while one of the configurations described in the right-hand pane, namely tracking-test.hal, isn't a choice in the left-hand pane. Just a few more KentNits.
