I have been thinking about using a universal motor from a junked vacuum
cleaner or similar machine. These often get clogged with dog hair, break
a belt, then instead of getting a new belt, the whole cleaner gets
replaced with a shinny new one. Without trying, I've got three of them
sitting on my shelves. I'm thinking of removing the motor, upgrading the
bearings ( maybe something like:

, and making up a housing and toolholder. It could be a lot of work, but
it could also be fun to make.

Another thought is to use the armature with some magnets to make servo
motors, since treadmill motors are getting scarce.
