Just a question of clarification:

Are you just talking about how touch off measures tools. or are you actually
going to enable G44.

I will again us my uncles Mori Seiki SV50 as a example since the machine tool
builder added a nice side feature. Oh and for those who ask before - It has a
FANUC 18MC made about 3 months before the release of the 18i. Anyway, under
tool setting options it has "MEASURE" and "MEASURE GAGE".(Actually they might
both be MEASURE but on different screens.)

The MEASURE softkey stores the machines G53 Z axis position to the selected
tool offset. The MEASURE GAGE soft key dose the same, but modifies the value by
the gauge length defined on the SETTINGS page.

I personally like to set tools referenced to the machine table when ever
possible, then put a Z value in the G54-G59 to define how high the Zero plain
is above the table. When the table is not assessable I set tool to the work and
leave the G54-G59 Z at 0.000 .
