These sorts of problems usually involve the hardware graphics chip set 
and the software graphics driver. A chorus of questions like yours crop 
up on various forums every time there is a new release of a Linux 
distribution or of the X distribution they all depend on.

It's difficult to diagnose your particular problem but I'd look first at 
the specific software driver you're using and see if I could find either 
a more up-to-date version or an alternative driver that works with your 
chipset. I know we're a copacetic bunch here, but you're more likely to 
find helpful information on a Ubuntu or X forum. The problem on general 
forums, of course, is separating the wheat from the chaff.

Actually, that should be "sudo Xorg -configure" to generate the conf 
file, but then you have to figure out what options and settings you 
need. Not such an easy task.

Are you doing something really stupid? That depends on who you ask. I 
don't think so (as long as no blood was involved!) but my wife would say 
yes. She sees this preoccupation with bits and bytes quite differently!
