Wow, thank You for such a detailed explanation! Actually I would like
to try this process, because now I feel like I understood
approximately half of it :)) The idea of creating my own .deb packages
seem very tempting!

Yes, the main reason for disliking run-in-place is the lack of entries
in "Applications" menu. I have noticed this new capability - the make
install-menus creates 2 entries - for EMC and latency test. There are
no manuals and there is no stepconf wizard.
How can I edit the label of those 2 entries that are created by make
install-menus? I do not like that (run in place) part.

I understand that these issues that I have been dealing lately with
customizing Axis GUI may seem not relevant and important, but my goal
is to offer EMC2 to wider public and make money for associated
services - retrofitting etc, so I want to learn, how to customize the
GUI so that it is tailored to needs of each particular case and would
involve the least possible learning curve for potential user.
