Here is a combination that works for me: Intel D510MO board with 2.4.6 EMC2.
Using a PicoPSU, memory, and 4G SATA SSD the whole system is small, cheap, and 
reliable.
Why get frustrated with untested motherboards?

-boot off the livecd and run mem check?  (hit the escape key when it
starts booting off the cd and you see the little icon on the bottom of
the screen (looks like a keyboard and a person iirc))

-overheating?

-hd issues?

I have run emc on a lot of systems testing..  I had the computer
physically lock up when the harddrive started getting relocated
sectors.  You can check the smart data from within lucid by looking at
the drive in >administration>drive utility.
