Several schemes have been suggested for how to switch back and forth between a spindle and a C axis. I think a couple people have done it. Certainly, EMC2 could be set up to do spindle orient for tool change, mostly you jog the spindle very slowly while watching a sensor for alignment. But, the basic EMC2 configs right now don't have a default setup for switching between a spindle (command speed with the S word, turn on and off with M03 - M05) and a C axis (command position with G01 C123.4 F5). I think it can be done, perhaps a little crudely, with general HAL components, though. Might need a pair of misc codes to do the mode switch.
