Just to add to Dave's message There are three major types of machine taps Spiral Flute - as referred to by Dave with those provisos, the spiral flute although they clear much of the chips back up the hole still need some end clearance. Spiral Point - for through holes Roll form taps - no chips to clear :) You can tap much nearer the bottom of a blind hole, the only thing to be careful of is using the correct tapping drill and some lube/coolant.
