One thing that comes to mind, X doesn't always (rather doesn't often) do
a good job configuring itself. It may help to try an AGP or PCI display
card to see if this allows the DVD to boot all the way. Sometimes an old
bare-bones card works best. If so, you may be able to install
EMC2/Unbuntu then add and configure the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get the
motherboard display controller to work. One change might be to force X
to use the generic vesa driver. I often need to look up the
specifications of the monitor and enter the numbers for HORIZSYNC and
VERTREFRESH in order to get resolutions above 800 x 600. The methods
that seem to work seem to change with each Ubuntu revision.
