If Your PC supports booting from USB, I also would recommend that.
I had difficulties with booting Lucid from external USB DVD drive
(bought it 2 years ago, I consider it not to be old and used very
much) on D510MO board. Well, to be honest, it did not boot at all, I
had the same symptoms - it displayed dots and never proceeded futher.
The same CD booted from the same drive on my
laptop. So it was unsolvable mystery to me, I ended up with booting
from USB.
BTW, booting from USB stick helps saving on DVD disc cost :)) You can
easily put newer version on USB stick many times and use the USB drive
for other purposes, when the system is installed.
