Another option if you want to use MDF, is to get it cut, then 'paint' the MDF edges with a half water, half wood glue (thin the glue) and paint it on the MDF edges (wherever the surface is not really flat) and that will fill the voids and keep it from 'leaking'.
Most peg board I have seen is NOT MDF. It is 'press board', think of taking layers of paper and gluing them together, where MDF is fine sawdust glued together. The paper adds a lot of strength to the board stock.
