I *love my metal cutting bandsaw (the slowsaw) for that exact reason.

I learned my lesson the tablesaw as well - twice. I was using a push-stick
like this one:

The problem with these sticks is that the vector of force on the stick is
directly pointing towards the blade, so if the stick is suddenly not there
where does your hand go? You guessed it. I got lucky and just took off the
tip of my finger.

After that I threw all those sticks away and went to a big 1.5" wide push
block with an inverted pistol grip on it - Yes, I turn it into sawdust and
have to make a new one every year but I haven't had a kick yet.

But then one day I was at the shop at a contract job with a local vehicle
manufacturer and needed to cut down a piece of wood and all they had in the
shop was a push-stick. Just one cut I thought but of course the wood got
loose on me, went shooting across the room and put a huge dent in a
prototype dashboard about 30 feet away.

But I got lucky again and the wood caught my hand on the way by and tore the
skin to shreds, but I've still got all my fingers, but strangely I've not
been invited back to use that shop since...

I learned my lesson thoroughly.
