What most likely happened (if the pc isn't infected) is someone figured out the email password. My wife had this happen with her yahoo mail account. Someone in china figured out her email address password - got in and emailed everyone in her address book. (it wasn't as bad as it could have been - it was just an ad). I know it was china from the email header info.
