In my wholly limited experience, it is the acceleration setting more than the velocity, which tends to cause lost steps in rapids. Prime danger time is the end of a cut with a sudden direction change and a short G0 rapid back to the start point again. On my lathe I was able to increase my MAX_VELOCITY having considerably reduced the existing MAX_ACCELERATION and have a nice soft start and finish to rapid moves.
