Second option sounds more attractive with several notes:
1) It would require additional effort on their free time to maintain
and keep it all running;
2) I agree that dependancy on one/two key people should be avoided;
3) I think that ads are not the most annoying thing. I prefer those
ads in Soureforge maintained list rather than lots of spam without ads
in self-maintained mailing list.
Careful reader might guess that I have no idea, how difficult is
setting up efficient spam filter...

If that helps, I would like to offer >1Gb space for backup storage or
whatever is necessary for LinuxCNC project on server, where my
homepage is hosted.
