We presently host the primary webserver, forums, and wiki on dreamhost,
and anticipate using this for mailing list and bug tracker hosting.

Yesterday I took the time to investigate dreamhost's discussion list
offerings more closely. I learned that:
 * There is a "mass subscribe" function, so that we should be able to
transfer the current subscriber lists with relatively little trouble.

 * The turnaround was very fast: 3 seconds from the message entering my
local smtp server to the list message arriving in my mailbox. Of
course, this is for a test list with 1 subscriber, not the
hundreds(?) of subscribers on this list.

 * The provision for spam filtering on the server is limited; it may be
   possible to enable RBL-based blacklisting and/or keyword-based
blacklisting. There does not appear to be a provision of
spamassassin-type filtering with rule-based and bayesian filters.

This is contrast to sourceforge, where spamassassin is used to filter
mail to lists before it is sent to subscribers. In my experience,
RBL-based filtering is a partial solution, and keyword-based
   filtering is useless.

However, we have a number of other options that we can employ to
limit spam: Out of the box, we would require confirming each new
subscription and hold or reject postings from non-members. If it
proves necessary, we will additionally set new list members to
"moderated", so that approval of a user's initial post will be
   required.

As a result, it is likely that spam filtering may be somewhat less
good with a dreamhost-based list. However, I think the range of
options available to us will allow us to do pretty good spam
   prevention.
