If you're using an AVR, and this is a spindle motor, then why not use an encoder on the motor, or at least the index pulse, to create your own phase signals. You could even shift the phase(3) to optimize the power, much like the offset brushes on DC motors (for reverse too). So it's all 'soft' commutation.
