If StepConfig added a warning comment line at the top of custom_postgui.hal
along the lines of

# !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
# WARNING the contents of this file will be overwritten if StepConfig is
run again
# !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then I probably would have realised what would happen.  The same could be
added to the other files that StepConfig creates.
