"Modern Machine Shop" for June (2012) features a hot steel spray
additive printer. The spray quenches as it hits the surface and is
harder than normal heat treatment. The price of admission for a small
unit is pretty high but is scales well; large units are not
proportionally more expensive since the spray unit is pretty much the
same $$ regardless of the size of the unit.
Since it is a spendy process it only gets used for mold making and maybe
aerospace parts.
