Next, "derivative patents" does not stop any one to used the old patents. derivative patents - usually do not add any much useful volume to old patent. About "patent trail" -- use core of old patent and you will be ok. patent trail -only open when one can see how to collect money. can you collect money from small shop? One can patent only novel idea and not simple design.
