Considering the near obsoletion of the parallel port, and the latency of USB, is it not possible to do CNC control using the SMBus as part of the PCI bus? Although the spec is only 100kHz, wouldn't this be fast enough? Perhaps it could be addressed directly and run at a higher speed. One could now have servo's and I/O control sitting as slaves on this bus. Once the two lines are brought out the PCI connector, slave boards could be of any form factor. The protocol is simple enough, and supported by most micro's, which would used to implement the I/O as slaves. Feasible?
