No, I think you are right.

You can probably just use maxkins as-is with no modification.

In your HAL file change
loadrt trivkins
to
loadrt maxkins
setp maxkins.pivot-length 20

(or whatever your pivot length is, possibly negative)

I think that maxkins expects the tool length to be stored in the W
column of the tool table.
