I think you proved that running Gcode programs off a remote network drive can be a problem.
Back when EMC was first written I doubt that they ever considered loading the entire file into ram as that was a precious resource. FWIW, Mach3 has similar issues and they recommend that the file be copied to the local drive before running it. With Mach3, running a Gcode program off a USB Flash drive can also be a problem.
