Thanks, on my way to get some.

I'm aware of that, it takes around 485F to 500F to soften or loosen most of
that stuff. If I ever have to take it off, it would be to replace the
bearing behind it, so telegraphing heat wouldn't be that much of a concern
since the bearing will likely be toast anyway. My problem would be finding
the heat, thats a BIG chunk of cast iron compared to my heat generators.

Cold out today, but I did rig a dpdt switch so I could try out various
braking resistor schemes, and stumbled over a 5 ohm 200 watt wirewound, a
surge limiter out of our old NTSC transmitter that seems about right from
about half speed its about 3 or 4 seconds to a dead stop. And if I can
find another 5 or 10 ohm like it, I maybe will stick a 25 volt avalanche
mode zener in series with a 24 volt relay coil so it uses the series combo
at high speed, then shorts the 10 ohm once the back emf gets down to 45 or
50 volts. I measured at the motor and its back emf doesn't noticeably drop
when shut off at speed, so from full speed with about 89 volts, it falls
off from that at about 2 volts a second until it has stopped. Excellent
generator IOW.

Actually, the thought just now crossed my mind to check on making a
constant current load, with which to draw say 8 or 9 amps regardless of the
voltage. I wonder how many hexfets that would take... I have some very
large heat sinks, but this would be a surge load, meaning tightly coupled
cold MASS to heat, might be doable. I'm thinking. Novel idea that, but it
would sure speed up the stop times by making the decel much more linear.
