So, purely a physical interface, no optos or anything like that.

First, with nothing connected and using a multimeter check that the
parallel port input pin sits at +5V.

Then short it to one of the 0V pins with a bit of wire and check that
doing that changes the state of the input in the software.

Then make sure that the voltage measured between the prox output wire
and the prox 0V wire is always less than 5V both with the prox
switched and not-switched.
(I just checked, and that is the case for mine).

If all that works then you should be able to connect the prox output
wire to the parport, even though the prox is working at 12V.
