This isn't quite right. You can run LinuxCNC on the 2X00 series boards just fine, but out of the box you won't have graphics acceleration. This is still usable, but is slower than one would like. Once you install Ubuntu 10.04LTS you will be greeted with a new hardware driver to install which DOES enable accelerated graphics on the built-in graphics card, and the system is fine at this point. The problem arises if you want to run any of the 12.X Ubuntu releases as this driver is not compatible with those releases (at least not currently).
