The method I described is very similar to that, but I must be missing
something when you say you can't use a pretty font. As long as LCNC thinks
its working in any 2 of XYZ planes by just temporarily swapping the drive
cables, you should be able to use any font on the menu. That would of
course demand a table connected to X or Y with near zero backlash, or
mapped compensation using two maps and a dual switched home indication.

I doubt if I could pull it off with my $100 4", not without first cleaning
it up, making a very wet paste of dico "stainless" to coat the worm with,
and running it for a week or so, driving the worm engagement screw another
10 degrees a day. It has run out in both the bull gear and the worm. A
harmonic drive table would be ideal of course, or one of the cycloid
drives, but I fail to see how one could compensate for wear of the output
shaft pins in the cycloid, whereas the bearing driving the bend in the
harmonic drive could be made adjustable quite easily.

Or I assume it would be possible to 'map' the backlash in this table, but I
haven't had enough interest in the how of it to even ask, because first I
would have to trade out the 3 jaw chuck on it now for a 4 jaw so the work
could be truly centered, something I miss on by at least 10 thou. What I
commonly use it for right now is to set angles for sharpening stuff with
one of the large dremel diamond wheels in the spindle. For that, its more
than "good enough for the girls I go with". ;-)

And yeah, I dream a lot. Goes with the years. And the crew is arriving to
ditch in the gas line for my generator, so I assume I should go observe.
Basically to see how much damage to a 45' pine trees roots the ditching
will do, as that will probably make me call someone to take it down since
it will do major damage if it just "comes down". They said they would try
to tunnel through it. We will see...

Later...

Cheers, Gene
