It's a product of the early electronic era, made for machines built to a 
certain level of precision and rigidity. G Code has its roots in the 
1950's and the RS274D standard was finalized Feb. 1980.

Like MIDI, G Code is old but has been tweaked and hacked to do things 
nobody thought of decades ago.

A granite floor or counter top tile can be flat enough for a 3D printer 
build platform. Weight in the platform will be an advantage if your 
printer is a design where the head moves in Z instead of the bed.

If you're thinking about using 15mm t slot extrusion, think harder about 
going with 40mm. Much stiffer than the 15mm size.
