Thanks Andy. I had in mind building a charge pump, but then it just
occurred to me that if that things 10 volt supply can't even run a sparkfun
opto kit, there obviously is not power enough to run a charge pump either.
I do have an isolated supply strong enough to do that but I'd have to fire
up eagle & design a whole new C-41 sized board to do it.

Charge pumps can be 1% linear if done right back in the late 50's when I
built a tach for my 52 mopar hemi-head, then used it for a speedometer for
several years, till I'd gotten all the goodie out of its 352 CID hemi.
That took most of 140k miles because the first thing I did was put a new
fangled paper air cleaner on it. Out on the hiway, it was 30 mph per
thousand rpm in high + OD, nailed to the firewall running across South
Dakota left to right or vice versa, it could sit at 3300 revs till it was
out of gas, which because even at that speed it got right at 20 mpg=about
400 miles on a tank at might as well be 100 mph. I have had only 2
vehicles in my 65 years behind the wheel that could do that, both of them
late 40, early 50 models. The other was a 49 Nash Ambassador. That engine
was heavily detuned but the stuff was all there. Double sprung, deeply
tuliped valves, mushroom tappet heads a good 2.25" in diameter, a square
lobed camshaft of about 270 degree duration. It could actually breath if
the cam timing was set a tooth late. When I say breath, I mean a good blip
of the throttle would send the tach north of 7000 revs, and a block long
run in low+OD would hit 8 & break ever piston ring in it, well over 4000
fps at the ring groove. So that killed that car, but it was just as well,
it didn't have brakes enough to stop a little red wagon. But it sure was a
"Concealed weapon" out on the road while it lasted. Easily outrunning
anything but a Duntov Chevy or a Motorola radio at the time. But the
Duntov was getting 4 mpg running that hard while I was getting about 19
mpg. :) Most of my quicker cars have been concealed weapons. Didn't look
the part at all.

Cheers, Gene
