That is true, Mesa's 7i85S is made just for this purpose.  I have one running a 
machine now, very very nice compared to software stepping.  The addition of the 
encoder feed back made tuning the servo drives much simpler.  I don't know if 
the final result is any better than ordinary open loop hardware stepping, but 
on this machine I have had difficulty getting a good tune on the drives, using 
just a scope and the drives tuning software.

That's not necessarily true. You can see step-dir as just another
velocity command method, like analogue voltage or PWM.

If you use velocity-mode stepgens instead of pwms then the LinuxCNC
part would look very much the same. This does assume you can get the
encoder signals back to LinuxCNC from the drives, though.
