Definitely will need some sort of geardown.  My thoughts would go to 
supporting the middle of that cross-shaft in a good bearing, and putting 
the single motor there, with a 17 to 49 or so timing belt drive, well 
tensioned for minimum effective backlash. That would be a lot cheaper than 
planetary gears I'd think. With the pinions spring loaded into the rack, 
it should work pretty good assuming the rack is adequately shielded from 
swarf.
