It does need the gui, altho there are some that almost look like ncurses and do not do a backplot. I like axis myself, which does do a backplot, and while the vesa drivers screen resolution is limited, it works well enough for axis. I regularly log into my shop machines from here to do maintenance etc using "ssh -Y machine" where machine is the alias in the hosts file. In fact, because this screen is bigger, I can stretch those "axis" gui's out to get a real close look. I also have an nfs share to the home dirs on those machines, and amanda backs them up every night.
