The 7I37 outputs are probably a bit slow for controlling a step drive above a 
few KHz (and also require a external power supply since they are just 
switches)


You should be able to drive the step/dir signals directly from the FPGA output
(they can source /sink 24 mA)

But you have to make sure you dont accidentally connect them to voltages >5 or 
< -0.5
