Some scope manufacturers use identical hardware for two or more models 
and only the model numbers on the case and the firmware are different.

Some don't even have different firmware, just a few ID bits different to 
enable or hide various capabilities.

Other equipment has been found like that. One model of FLIR handheld 
infrared scope can be quickly upgraded to a much more expensive model 
with double the horizontal and vertical resolutions. Same sensor, same 
LCD screen and everything - just a few different bits that cripple its 
capabilities.
