Hi Kirk,

For the simple board sandwich you're describing, all you need is
"stackable headers". They're on Ebay, (I added "connectors" to the
search term, for good luck), but they have to be on Mouser and Digikey.
Most of the prices I saw on Ebay were too high - I wouldn't pay that
much - ah, 20 off 8 pin for $5, that's more like it. This one's a bit
dearer, but from HK, not the mainland, so might be a better investment:

Stackable headers are what's used e.g. between an Arduino and its
"shield". (I have one within arms reach. With four of them around its
edges, you have to take a bit of care when pulling them apart - at least
just as they separate.) All that holds the boards together is the
friction of the pins, and you can chuck the assembly across the room
without them separating.

With stackable headers, you can go for a three or four layer sandwich,
if desired. (Either with one column forming a vertical bus, or with
quite separate interconnections at some layers, offset from those
below.)

The automated test equipment probes are, as already mentioned, for
production testing of manufactured circuit boards. I wouldn't use them
for this purpose.
