I am wondering, though, if it might not be a better idea to use a very
simple transformer/rectifier/cap PSU. The solenoid coil seems rather
indifferent to the quality of power, it works down to 5V and probably
wouldn't melt at 50 V. Currently it has a duty cycle of 1.5 A for
100mS every 30 seconds. A ??300 PSU for that seems overkill.

The problem seems likely to be finding a cap that can smooth 1.5A at
50Hz but that will also last a long time.

What about no cap? The time constant of the solenoid may be sufficient
to filter the 100 Hz ripple, and if not, a series inductor could be added
