Jon,
Thank you, all I have to do is learn how to use Halscope rather than buy an
oscilloscope just for this.
However, since I don't want or need spindle reverse (screw on chucks!), I'm
thinking of trying just a single pulse to begin, or perhaps better something
like this:

at 6.1 where just phase A and index is used.
I hope hardware setup will be easier since I won't need to get phase A-B
quadrature alignment setup. If that will work initially I can make it more
sophisticated as I learn more.
