Since both need to be in place anyway, I'd leave the variator controller
for "later implementation", and vary with the VFD initially. Iff (If and
only if) the low end torque doesn't suffice on a job, and you can't just
manually set the variator once-off for the job, then the time for a
variator controller has arrived. Perhaps a couple of steps would
suffice, and could be treated as a gearbox?

That's sacrilegious treatment of a variator, I suspect - and I notice
that you have more round-tuits that I do, so a motorised handle-winder
may not be so much of a hold-up there. (Stepper, driver, and a bit of
HAL?)
