Andy, I'd be tempted to lock the variator in place in a low-ish gear for torque and then hook a VFD up to the motor. I'd over speed the motor beyond nameplate by 50% or so to get top speed. I think that most motors will run 150% without problems for quite a while. That may get you closer to ideal. You will have low end torque multiplication with the drive and still get power at higher speeds and be able to use the VFD for speed control. If for some reason you need more low end torque, unlock the variator and increase the torque multiplication, lock it down again and rescale your VFD speed setting.
