Best is to use an enable signal on the controller when it
has one.  Next best is to turn the controller on and off.
Worst is putting anything between the controller and the
motor.  On some motors and controllers disconnecting
the motor from the controller under load can damage
the controller.

When power is applied to the controller the motor starts running
Is it ok to switch the controller off/on or better to put a relay between the 
motor and the controller
